Icons Style

General considerations

  • use primary colors sparingly
  • let colors have meaning: choose one color to represent the object in the scene, another one for what the tool does to the object - consistently for all icons

Menu icons are only visible as 16x16 pixels, which is quite small. This means that the icons have to be reduced to clear and unique forms and should only try to convey the most basic meaning of the command they represent. Also, the main purpose of these icons is not to give the user an idea of what the corresponding command does, but rather to provide a visual identification of the command once the command is known and identified wih the corresponding icon. Therefore, it is important that the icons are easily distinguished from one another.

If a command in the menu has a corresponding command in the toolchest, the icon should be made so that it resembles the toolchest icon as closely as possible within the given restrictions.

Toolchest Icon Guidelines

Toolchest icons are large icons that really need to represent what the command does in clear fashion. These icons do not have a textual representation besides them. The colour scheme that figured out to look nice is as follows: A red symbol of the tool representing the operation in the lower left corner, the scene of what will happen in the background. Objects in this background scene are represented by primitives in undersatured blue for things like models (boxes, cones, ...) with alpha gradient to symbolize different time stadiums of the scene (where possible). Symbolic objects that are not realy seen in the scene but used to symbolize something in an operation (like lamp or trash bin) have realistic colours. The general style uses black outlines and smooth colour gradients for 3D effects.
